C. diff Vaccine
Description
Clostridium difficile, or C. diff, is a bacteria found in soil, air, water, food products, and in human and animal feces. Spores from the C. diff bacteria are passed in feces and spread to food, surfaces and objects when people who are infected don't wash their hands thoroughly. If you touch a surface contaminated with these spores, you may unknowingly ingest the bacteria. Your gut – like all ecosystems – is a delicate balance containing numerous bacterial species. When a person’s bacteria balance is upset, toxic infections such as Clostridium difficile could develop.
Causes and Symptoms
Most often a Clostridium difficile infection occurs when a person has been taking antibiotics for a prolonged period of time. Antibiotics are intended to kill the harmful bacteria and improve a sick person’s immune system; however they can also remove too much of the body’s healthy bacteria, creating an opportunity for external bacteria to thrive. Although antibiotics are most commonly cited as the causation for C. diff, those living within a nursing facility or people who have stayed in the hospital recently have a higher risk of developing the infection.
Symptoms include frequent diarrhea, dehydration, abdominal pain, fever, nausea and loss of appetite. In the most severe cases this infection could possibly lead to a body-wide infection, organ failure, or even death
